日本で初めてのけいけん (The first experience in Japan) ---- ジナ

洗濯(sentaku, laundry）

アパートに来た時、服を洗う事はあまり考えていませんでした。When I first came to Japan, I didn't even think about cleaning my clothes.

日本に来た後、すぐスーパーに行って、食べ物やふつうの石けんなどを買いました。
 After I came to Japan, I went to a store and I bought food and sops.

しかし、服を洗おうとした時、洗濯機にいろいろ分からない漢字が書いてありました。However, Wen I went to wash my clothes, on the washer, there were a lot of Kanjis that I didn't understand.

ルームメートたちが出かけていったので、こまりました。As my roommates were out, I was in a fix.

水位(water level),行程(process),注水(pouring water),脱水(spin-drying)

でも、先生にイメールを送って、やくしてもらいました。However, I sent an email to my teacher and she translated it for me.

洗濯のし方(かた)が 分かるようになりました。I was able to understand how to clean my laundry.

それから、ルームメートたちが かえった時、「どうやって洗濯しますか？」と聞きました。After that, when my roommates came home, I asked them how they did their luandry.

ルームメートたちは もう 長いあいだ日本に住んでいるのに、洗濯のし方(かた)が分かりませんでした。Even though they had been in Japan for a long time, they did not know how to do their laundry.

きっと、男の人でしたから。。Probably because they were guys.

初めての日本(hajimete no nihon, Went to Japan for the first time) --- ジナ

 この夏休み、初めて日本に行きました。This summer break was the first time I went to Japan.
日本語をもう４年間ぐらい勉強していました。それで、日本に行ってみたかったです。I have been studying Japanese for 4 years already, so I wanted to try to go.
そして、日本にいる間、勉強したかったです。However, I wanted to study in the meantime.

それで、アパートや日本語教室やこうくけんなどのじゅんびをしました。So, I made preparations for an apartment, a Japanese language school, and with my boarding ticket.
また、日本人の友達にアドバイスをしてもらいました。Also, I got some advice from my Japanese friends.

でも、いろんな事を聞いていたのに、日本に来た時、とてもビックリしました。However, even though I heard a lot of things about Japan, when I came I was very shocked.私の出身、セントルイスは日本と とても ちがいます。Originally I'm from St. Louis, and it is very different from Japan.

回転ずし(at a conveyor belt suchi bar, yummy!)

どこかへ行きたい時、車がなかったら、何も出来ません。When you want to go somewhere, if you don't have a car, you can't do anything.
バスが有りますが、あぶないし、あまり来ないし、不便です。There are buses, but they are dangerous, don't come often, and they are very inconvenient.

でも、日本の交通
電車やバスやタクシーなどたくさん有ります。There are trains, buses and taxes.

はとても便利です。However, Japanese transportation is very convenient.
それで、あまりもんだいがなかったです。Also, I didn't have any problems.

安全なので、まよった時、だれかに聞くと、方向(道順,michijun)を教えてくれました。It was safe, and when I was lost, I asked someone and they explain the directions to me.
時々、つれていってくれました！Sometimes they guided me.
とても優しいひとたちでした。They were very nice people.

それで、日本にいる間に、学校に行きました。Also, while I was in Japan, I went to a school.
ARCと言う学校です。The school is called ARC Academy.
その学校でたくさん勉強をしました。I studied a lot at that school.
ARCでは日本語で日本語を勉強しましたので、時々したくなかったが、たすかりました。In ARC, one studies Japanese in Japanese, so sometimes I didn't feel like studying but it was very helpful.
先生はとても優しくて、おもしろかったです。The teachers were very nice, and interesting.
じゅうぎょうではたくさん生とがいて、いろんな外国人の友達を作りました。In the classes, there were a lot of students, so I made a lot of foreign friends.
一緒に日本語を練習しました。We practiced Japanese together.

ＡＲＣ学校で作った友達と一緒に原宿に買い物に行きました。I went shopping with my friend from ARC Academy in Harajuku.
日本に買い物に行くのはアメリカとくらべて、とてもちがいます！When shopping in Japan, it is very different from America.
くつを買う時、Ｓ，Ｍ，Ｌのサイズしかが有りません。When you buy shoes, the only sizes are S,M,L.
少し不便です。It's a bit inconvenient.
もし、大きい足だったら、きっと買えないです。If your feet are very big, you probably can't buy any shoes.
それも服を買う時、時々フリーサイズだけが有ります。Also, when buying clothes, sometimes the only size they have is free size. 時々不便です。Sometimes, it's inconvenient.

最後に、服を着てみる時、試着室　に入るとくつをぬぐんですよ！Lastly, when you try on clothes and you enter the fitting room, take your shoes off!
定員さんから言われるのはちょっと恥ずかしいので、わすれないで下さい！It's embarrassing to be told by the sales man. Please don't forget!

まだ、一杯めずらいしいちがいが有りますが、日本に行かないと、わかりません。There are still many unusual differences, but if you don't go to Japan, you won't understand.
もし、日本語を勉強しているなら、日本に行くのを　おすすめします。If you study Japanese, I recommend you to go.
日本の文化や生活は外人にめずらいしくて、おもしろいです。Japanese culture and life style is very unusual.
きっと楽しいですよ！It will probably be very fun!

シンガポールのゴミについて Singapore's rubbish --- ジャスミン

 シンガポールのゴミについて   Singapore's rubbish

 シンガポールはゴミの分別が厳しくなくて、強制ではありませんので、日本に比べてもっと緩(ゆる)いシステムです。As Singapore does not have a strong garbage classification culture and it is not mandatory, therefore, compared to Japan, we have a more relaxed system towards the treatment of rubbish。

例えば、各アパートの共用空間には青い箱があります。For example, various apartment blocks(Note: in Singapore we actually call these Housing Development Board flats, i.e. HDB flats. They are public housing and not private housing, hence they are affordable to the majority in Singapore. It is Singapore government's policy to ensure public housing remains affordable to everyone) have common spaces, where there is a blue bin.

この青い箱は再生利用できる物（プラスチック、金属、紙製など）を入れます。There is a blue bin that everyone can throw recyclable items such as plastic, metal and paper.

他の物は全部一般の共用箱に捨てます。We throw other types of general waste into the common garbage bins.

毎朝、ゴミ収集車は各アパートの共用箱と青い箱を別々に集めます。Every morning, the garbage truck will collect the respective rubbish from both the blue recycled bin and the common refuse bin.

その後、セイノコ 「SENOKO」（所の名前）に行きます．After collection, all garbage trucks will drive to Senoko (this is a place's name in Singapore that has the incineration plant).

その場所は再生利用できる物をリサイクルの会社に売りますが、他の燃える物はすべて火で燃やします。As Senoko incineration plant, they will sell recyclable items to recycling companies and burn the rest of the general waste.

シンガポールはいついつは「燃えるゴミの日」、また、いついつは「燃えないゴミの日」だという決まりがありません。Singapore do not have the culture of collecting certain types of garbage on certain days.

同様に、日本のそんなに細かいゴミ分別文化もありません。Similarly, we do not have the culture of detailed classification/segregation of garbage.

人にとって楽ですが、環境にとってもっと努力が必要です。From the human's perspective, this definitely makes life much easier, however, from the environmental perspective, more effort is needed.

日本に行って 驚いたこと (Surprising Things about Japan) --- ジャスミン

おととしは初めて日本に行きました。(I visited Japan for the first time the year before last year.)
日程は１２日ぐらいの東京、箱根と横浜の旅行でした。(Over a period of 12 days, I went to Tokyo, Hakone and Yokohama.)
この三つのところはとてもきれいで、 忘れられません。(I would never forget about the beauty of these three places.)
でも、二つ、三つびっくりしたことがあります。(However, there are a few occasional surprises.)

 まず、東京は(少しゴミ箱です)ゴミ箱が少ししか　ありません。(Firstly, Tokyo has very few rubbish bins.)
毎日、八時に寮を出て，朝ごはんはいつもおにぎりでした。(Every morning at eight o'clock, I will beave the dormitory and have onigiri for breakfast on the way out.)
 だから、食べた後、包む物を捨てたい時，ゴミ箱が　どこにもないのでよく困りました。(Therefore, when I want to throw away the wrappers after eating, I can not find the rubbish bin, which is an inconvenience to me.)
しばらくして、ゴミ箱を女子トイレで　見つけました。(shortly after, I realised that only public female toilets have garbage bins.)
どうしてこんなに少ししかゴミ箱がなくて、皆、自分のゴミを一日中ずっと持っているのか今でもわからないです。(It still puzzles me until today why Tokyo have so few rubbish bins and  everyone has to carry their own trash with them for the whole day.)

二つ目、日本のコンビニは多くのサビースを提供することにびっくりしました。(Secondly, I was pleasantly surprised that Japan's convenience stores provide a variety of service.) 宅配サビース，おでん、図書館の本を返すことなどいろいろ便利なサビースがありました。(That ranges from courier services, oden to returning of library books.)
それに比べると、シンガポールのコンビニはつまらない店です。(Compared to Japan Singapore's convenience store is boring.)

三つ目、電車の中で携帯電話をかけることは禁止されています。(Thirdly, telephoning in the train is prohibited in Japan.)
でも、飲食は許されてます。(But, eating in the train is allowed.)
逆に、シンガポールの電車の中で携帯電話をかけることは許されていますが、飲食は禁止されています。(On the contrary, telephoning in the train is allowed in Singapore while eating and drinking are prohibited.)
ですから、お腹がすいた時、飲食をしてもいいことをすっかり忘れていました。(Therefore, I totally forgot that eating and drinking in the train when I was hungry are allowed.)

最後、一番の楽しみと恥ずかしいことは公衆浴場と温泉です。(Last, the best pleasure and the most embarrassing thing is a public bath and a hot spring.)
お風呂と温泉に入る前に全部服装を脱いで裸のままで、皆の前で洗います。( Before taking a bath, one needs to be completely naked and wash one's body in front of others in public bathhouses and onsens
この経験はシンガポールでは出来ませんので、勇気を出せば、お風呂と温泉を楽しむことが出来ます。(As this experience is not available in Singapore, if one is unable to muster the courage I'm afraid one may not give it a try.)

ちかくの みせ Shops Near My House －－ ヘレン

コンビニ

 ★どこが　いちばん　すきですか。Which shop do you like the best?

二百円（にひゃくえん）ショップ

わたし の うち の ちかく に みせが みっつ あります。There are 3 shops near my house.
   
コンビニ と 200えんショップ とスーパー です。
A convenience store and Two dollar Shop and a supermarket.   


コンビニは いちばん ちいさい みせです が ちかい です。    Convenience is the smallest shop but it's close.
   
うち から あるいて ５ふんです。    It's 5 minutes walk from the house.   

いろいろな ものが あまり おおくないです。There is not much variety.
   
やさいや くだものも ぜんぜん ありません。 There no fruits and vegetables.   

がいこくの ものは ぜんぜん ありません。 There are no foreign things.   

200えんショップ は うちから くるまて ５ふん かかります。  The two dollar shop is a 5 minute drive from the house.
   
いちばん やすい みせ です。It is the cheapest store.   

スーパー は いちばん とおい です。 そして、 たかい です。    The supermarket is the farthest, and most expensive.
   
さかな は あまり おおくないですが　にくが たくさん あります。    There is not much fish but there is a lot of meat.
   
がいこく の たべもの が おおい です。     There is a lot of foreign food.

    とても おおきい みせです。  It's a really big store.   

スーパーが いちばん おおきいです。 The supermarket is the biggest.   

みつ の みせ の なかで わたしは スーパーが いちばん すきです。 Out of the three stores, I like the supermarket store the best.   

タイ旅行（りょこう）My Holiday in Tailand －－ ジャスミン

先先週、私はタイに行きました。I went to Thailand the week before the last week.
この旅行は三週間前からずっと楽しみにしていました。I was already looking forward to it for three weeks prior to the trip.

 旅行はインターネットで夜遅く（２：３０am）探（さが）した時、「あった、ちょう、やすいね！」といっていました。I found the travel package late at night (around 2.30am) and it was super cheap!

９８ドルだけでした！空港税（くうこうぜい）を含（ふく）めて全部（ぜんぶ）で、たったの約３００ドルでした！　It only costs 98 dollars. Including airport taxes, the entire package only costs $300!

Singapore Airlines のチケットとホテルと半日ガイド・ツアーと６０分のマッサージを含めて、だから、私の友たちもよろこびました。Singapore Airlines’ tickets, hotel accommodation, half-day city tour and a 60-minute massage were included in this package deal. Therefore, my friend was also happy.

飛行機で２時間かかりました。It took 2 hours of flight to get to Thailand.

一日目はガイド・ツアーで有名な買い物センターに行きました。On the first day, we went to the famous shopping centres in Bangkok.

Pratunam

Platinum　と　Pratunam　にいっぱい服があって、一日中ずっと買い物をしました。Platinum and Pratunam shopping centres have so many clothes that we spent the entire day shopping.

でも、この二つのい物センターが大き過ぎて、一日では全部の店を見足りませんでした。Howwever, a day was not enough as there were just too many shops in these two centres. 
二日目の朝は半日ガイド・ツアーが始まりました。On the second day, we started with the half day city tour.

ワット・アルンのお寺と蜂蜜工場（はちみつこうじょう）と宝石工場（ほうせきこうじょう）を訪問しました。We went to Wat Arun, honey factory and jewellery factory.

ワット・アルンのお寺の階段（かいだん）が急（きゅう）すぎで、途中（とちゅう）で止まったりしました。As the steps were too steep at Wat Arun, I stopped halfway.

お寺を下りる時、腿(もも）の筋肉（きんにく）が肉ばなれしてしまいました。On my way down the temple, I pulled my thigh muscle.

幸いに無料（むりょう）のマッサージがその夜ありました。Fortunately, the free massage was on this evening.

マッサージの後、気分（きぶん）がすっきりしました。 After a good massage, I felt refreshed.

三日目はワット・ポウのお寺と四面大仏（しめんだいぶつ）も訪問（ほうもん）しました。On the third day, we went to Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha) and the Four-Faced Buddha.

この後、友たちは我慢（がまん）できないので、午後から夜まで買い物ばかりでした。After that, my friend could not endure anymore and we went shopping in the afternoon.
本当につかれました！！ It was truly tiring!

この夜は有名なマッサージを予約して、今回は２時間でした。We booked a two-hour massage at a famous massage centre on this night.

２０ドルだけど、ぜいたくなマッサージセンターは最高（さいこう）でした。Although it only costed $20, the luxurious massage centre was fantastic.

タイはとても面白（おもしろ）くて活気（かっき）があるので、必ず行きましょう！You must visit Thailand as it has many interesting activities!  

                                                                                                            

夢について－－ハエル About a Dream -- Jael

毎晩、人間はみんな夢を見られるけど、どうして夢を見ることができるのか、普通の人は自分で　あまり考えていないんだ。Every night, human-beings can have visions of dreams, but ordinary people don't think much of why they can see dreams.

普通に、毎晩ベッドに入ってそのままで寝て、後７時間ぐらいが過ぎると、次の朝に見た夢はすぐ忘れてしまって普通の生活をする。でも、実はその７時間は無駄ではなく、体が休息できるし、二つ目の人生も経験できそう。In general, they go to bed and sleep every night, and every morning after 7 hours pass, they continue with their normal life forgetting the dreams they saw the night before, however, the 7-hour period is not actually useless but meaningful for relaxation and they seem to be able to experience their second life.

私は子供のころから見た夢の面白さに引かれて、夢の中で見たことを書き記し始めた。I was fascinated by the dreams I saw during my childhood, and I started writing down what I saw in my dream.

今でも、２８歳で、夢日記を続けていて、毎朝見た夢の内容をこの特別な日記に書く。I have kept writing a diary of dreams even now at my age of 28, and I record the content of the dreams I saw every morning.

夢のスケッチも描いていると不思議なイメージが出てくる。When I make a sketch of the dream, mysterious images come out.

例えば、今朝、夢を見。。。For exmaple, I saw a dream this morning....

アートギャラリで私の先生の展覧会が開かれた。An exhibition by my art teather was held at an art gallery.

先生の作品を一つひとつ見て、理解できた。I could understand all of my teacher's works after I saw it one by one.

そこに　あった作品は抽象的な絵画とか、現代彫像とか、先生と作品についておたがいに話しした。There were works such as abstract paintings and modern statues there, and the teacher and I talked about all of these together.

そして私の一番好きな作品は黒い蝶々の機械だった。And then, my most favorite work was "Butterfly Machine".

この作品は白くて大きな箱の上に長いアンテナがあって、このアンテナの上に黒い蝶々がいた。As for this work, there was a long antenna on a white and big box, and a black butterfly was on the antenna.

そして、蝶々の翼が動いたら、機械も動く。And, as the butterfly flutters, the machine starts working.

この不思議な機械は特別な使い道があった。There was a specific use for this mysterious machine.
それは世界のバランスを守ることだった。It was to keep balance to the universe.

ある心理学者によると、夢は人にとって特別な象徴でメッセージを持っている。According to a psychologist, a dream is a symbol with a special message for people.
